Does coffee really help before or after a run?

I've heard that coffee helps to speed up muscle recovery after a run. Is this true? I love to make my run social by running with a couple of friends finished with a coffee - that's why the Tan is so great! But I'm not sure whether we should be having coffee after running. I've heard mixed reports.

I usually like to go for my runs on an empty stomach! If I do have coffee, it’s definitely after my runs!
